Public hearing on carbon-emitting plants |

AUGUSTA - Last week, the Bruce MacDonald (D-Boothbay) bill, LD 2126, “An Act to Require Capture and Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide Emissions from New Coal-powered Industrial Facilities in the State,” moved through its public hearing phase. On Wednesday at 1 p.m., the bill moved into work session, but no information about the work session was available by press time.

NOBLEBORO - This weekend, four friends were injured when they were crossing Damariscotta Lake and hit a patch of open water. Three of the friends were able to get out quickly, but one did not, so one of the riders already out of the water jumped in to save the fourth.

Internal investigation underway |

BATH - The Sagadahoc County Commissioners voted on Monday to authorize an immediate investigation into an allegation of sexual harrassment made by a patrol deputy against Sheriff Mark Westrum. The alleged conduct occurred in 2006, but was never reported to the commissioners. Nevertheless, according to Commissioner Alan Houston, the Commissioners have a responsibility to county employees and the public to review all allegations of this nature, no matter when or how they emerge.

Castro's move sends ripples into midcoast |

BRUNSWICK - No one really knows what it will mean: Fidel Castro will no longer be President and Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of Cuba. Most of us in the United States don't remember any other leader in Cuba. In fact, most of us don't really know much about the place: it's Communist; it's run by a dictator; the US imposed a trade embargo almost 50 years ago; they play baseball, few of us are allowed to visit.
