Maine Votes 2008

by Brandon Carter

The GOP primary season is shaping up to be less about the difference in the candidates' visions and much more about their records on staple issues like tax reform, health-care, and education.  Those issues are still on the table for Republican voters, but with a recession looming, an energy crisis pending, and a war that refuses to end, the candidate lucky enough to survive Super Tuesday will have to spell out a compelling vision to compete with the somewhat loftier Democratic front-runners.  Mitt Romney, John McCain, Mike Huckabee, and Rudy Giuliani. all seem to agree on “pro-growth” solutions to health-care and the economy, increased funding for alternative energy research, the importance of securing U.S. borders, tougher stances with Iran and Syria, a softer stance with Israel, and a bolstered U.S. military to achieve success in Iraq.  And then there’s Ron Paul. The following is a brief glimpse of the candidates' stances on key issues in the race so far and the winning hand their banking on to secure the votes of Maine Republicans in this weekend's caucuses.

BATH - What do you get when you cross a quiver of arrows and a gymnasium full of hula hoops? It may sound like the circus has come to town, but really it's just the latest Saturday Adventure at Huse, the former Kindergarten center located at 39 Andrews Road. These are just the beginning of a winter full of activities to be held in an effort to bring community resources, law enforcement, and families together in a safe haven for area youth.

BRISTOL - Nestled behind Pemaquid Beach is a special place, a 6-acre salt marsh that is now on the road to once again being a healthy ecosystem.  Prior to 2005, the marsh had limited saltwater input due to a roadway culvert that restricted tidal flow, which was resulting in the marsh transforming into a brackish wetland.  Thanks to the initiative and diligence of local resident, Joan Lyford, in bringing attention to the problem, the culvert was replaced in 2005, restoring the natural tidal flow and increasing native salt marsh vegetation.  The culvert replacement work in 2005 was completed thanks to funding from Coastal America, the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment/National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Habitat Restoration Partnership, Maine Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership, and the Town of Bristol.
