My earliest memory of vinyl records is Christmas with the Chipmunks, one of only three or four flawless records ever produced.  I don’t really remember the turntable we had, though I think it sat in a wood casing, but I do remember messing with the rpm switch to get Alvin, Simon, and Theodore to sing even higher and faster than they already did.  Other than that, I think we had The Black Cauldron on vinyl - you know, that bizarre Disney movie from the 80s? - and I do recall hearing some Stevie Wonder, though that could have been on cassette tape.

“It is disappointing that the President is proposing to slash funding for many vital programs such as homeland security grants, funding to help low-income families and seniors heat their homes, and funding for Medicaid and Medicare.  Particularly troubling is that despite the clear need for additional funding for the LIHEAP program, the President is proposing to cut the program by 22 percent. With home heating costs this winter forcing people to choose between medicine and heat, the President should have included much more than $2 billion in his request.  I will continue to seek additional funds to help meet the needs of low-income families and seniors this winter.

A generation ago, we were exhorted to “tune in” to the world to effect change.  With all the problems we are facing, both in Maine and across the country, from the war to the health care issue to the looming environmental and energy crisis to the housing collapse and the general economic malaise, it would be terribly easy to throw up our hands and be unable to see beyond those problems ... to pull back into our metaphorical shells and wait for the storm to blow over.
