BNAS closure cost balloons PDF Print E-mail

BRUNSWICK – In 2011, Brunswick Naval Air Station will finally close, and its hundreds of service members will transition from Brunswick, Maine to Jacksonville, Florida.  Its housing will stand empty, at least temporarily, and its great airport will be silent.  The reason for the closure, it must be remembered, was to save money.  But the cost for closing the base have risen by $107 million since the initial estimate in 2005, to nearly $300 million.  The cost to close the base is greater than the amount the Department of Defense believed they would save by the closure ... some $222 million.

New programs at lighthouse retreat PDF Print E-mail
PENOBSCOT BAY - Beginning in the summer of 2008, Pine Island Camp, a summer camp for boys that has been in operation in Belgrade Lakes for over 100 years, will expand its mission to begin offering enrichment programs for adults at the Whitehead Light Station in Penobscot Bay.   The director of the Whitehead Light Station programs is Ben Swan of Brunswick, who has served as director of Pine Island Camp since 1990.

The real caucus story

BATH - By now, everyone has heard the numbers ... during the Democratic caucuses on Sunday, Barack Obama walked away with 59% of the vote, to Hillary Clinton’s 40%.  But the real story wasn’t the 60-40 vote split, or the number of statewide delegates Obama received (15) compared to the number Clinton received (9), or even the potential crisis of confidence in the primary process that the superdelegates pose.

The real story is far more local, and therefore, more interesting.

Maine recovers money from pharmaceutical giant PDF Print E-mail
AUGUSTA - Maine Attorney General Steve Rowe has announced that Maine’s Medicaid program will receive approximately $2.2 million as part of two separate global settlements with Merck & Co., Inc. The settlements involve 49 states, the District of Columbia and the federal government, totaling $649 million.
