A Bath- type viaduct was rejected early on in the route selection process for a Wiscasset Route 1 bypass. But, under the circumstances, it may be time to look at it again. Compared to the options that MDOT is now planning, the viaduct idea, as flawed as it may be, could be far better. Here are some reasons why.

Resolving to make resolutions |

I was reading the Dolce Far Niente column from the December 27th issue of the Coastal Journal and wish to say that part of it resonated with me as true and other parts I found inspiring and moving. In my youth, I never made New Year's Resolutions because I found that people never really stick to them; perhaps never is too strong a word-rarely. Moreover, I didn't understand the reason for making a change of importance at that particular time of year. It seemed to me that we make changes when we truly make up our minds to, when we want them badly enough to do whatever it takes to make them a reality.

No more toxic toys under the tree |

Another Christmas should not go by with parents worrying that the toys under their family’s tree are toxic. That’s why I’m pleased that the House unanimously passed the Consumer Product Safety Modernization Act, H.R. 4040 on December 19, 2007, just a few days before Christmas.

Call the arrival of Juno in theatres a wrap on one of Hollywood’s unlikely trends in 2007: Unwanted pregnancy. While it might make for awkward dinner conversation ala King Middle School, moviegoers can’t seem to get enough of the young, tough, smart-mouthed pregnant heroine. Waitress, Knocked Up, and now Juno all deserve credit for their treatment of the issue.; they all dared to be flippant, funny, and honest about a touchy subject that has become political fodder for both wings of the country.
