When I was young and charming, I resolved never to make New Year’s Resolutions, because it was just too darn depressing when, three weeks into the new year, I fell off the proverbial wagon.  In later years, I realized that it is sometimes important to make resolutions, in order to give oneself a goal.  But they should be considered suggestions, open to change and evolution, and in a wise and mature manner, if by a somewhat circuitous route, one arrives at the Goal.

Part of the reason why it will cost Maine’s seniors twice what it cost last year to heat their homes and fuel their cars (as well as the rest of us) is because of a little known change, in 2000, to commodities law known as the Enron Loophole. The trading of energy commodities by large firms on OTC electronic exchanges was exempted from Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) oversight by a provision inserted at the behest of Enron and other large energy traders into the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000 in the waning hours of the 106th Congress.
