BRUNSWICK - No one really knows what it will mean: Fidel Castro will no longer be President and Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of Cuba. Most of us in the United States don't remember any other leader in Cuba. In fact, most of us don't really know much about the place: it's Communist; it's run by a dictator; the US imposed a trade embargo almost 50 years ago; they play baseball, few of us are allowed to visit.

BATH - The Sagadahoc County Commissioners voted on Monday to authorize an immediate investigation into an allegation of sexual harrassment made by a patrol deputy against Sheriff Mark Westrum. The alleged conduct occurred in 2006, but was never reported to the commissioners. Nevertheless, according to Commissioner Alan Houston, the Commissioners have a responsibility to county employees and the public to review all allegations of this nature, no matter when or how they emerge.

Seeing the world from rose-colored eyes |

I had to give my talk about the Flappers of Woolwich on Saturday morning, and I felt like day-old cow patty. I mean, I really had no choice. It had all been planned for months. I had my speech and my video, the flapper girls were ready to go in Woolwich Historical Society Museum Collections, and I had safety pins if I needed them. So I went to the drug store and bought a hand sanitizer spray, liberally sprayed my hands and arms, got a bottle of water, and dashed off (rather slowly as it turned out) to the library.

The lost art of handwriting |

Maybe we can blame the computers for this one. First it was the printing press, then the typewriter threatened the vitality of handwritten correspondence, but in both cases neither invention was enough to undermine the pen and paper. Certain instances, like thank you notes and signing credit-card receipts, call for the flick of the wrist. But how often do you write thank you notes? How many coffee shops
still make you sign for that bagel? Did you know you can do your taxes
online? Electronic signatures, PINs, e-mail, and overall carelessness
have left hand-to-hand relations cold. Our reliance on computers, for
better or worse, has led to a troubling question for educators across
the country: Do we really need to keep drilling students on their
handwriting in school?

So you know Bruce [Hardina]?
Yeah, I know Bruce. He says you guys might be related, but that he’s not really sure...?
We’re pretty sure that his great-grandfather was my grandfather’s brother. I have pictures of my grandfather and William, his brother, as young boys when they had rescued a girl from the East River in New York and received life saving medals. I still have my grandfather’s medal. Putting some things together, we just had to come up with this idea that his great-grandfather and my grandfather were related. The name Hardina is not very common, my grandmother always said it meant “hero” but it really means “important person.”
