A terrible thing failed to happen the other day, and I can only say that I'm extremely disappointed. The Large Hadron Collider, which went online a couple of weeks ago somewhere outside Geneva, Switzerland, failed to produce a black hole that would have otherwise destroyed the world. A dismal failure. (I have been somewhat compensated in the interim by the demolition of Yankee Stadium. Thank God for small favors.)

My interest in disinterestedness |

Once upon a time in the world, worthy people were often praised for their disinterested character, “disinterested” being a word properly understood to mean “unaffected by self-interest.” Note that this does not mean “having no interest” or “not interested” - anyone lacking interest, in the sense of being actively invested or involved in things around them, might safely be said to be in a coma.
