Brunswick NAS: Reuse or Refuse? PDF Print E-mail

The Defense Base Closure And Realignment (BRAC) committee-ordered closure of Naval Air Station - Brunswick (NASB) came as a shock to the midcoast several years ago, and forced the region to come to grips with a significant economic problem. As has been the case in other BRAC closures, including one which I have witnessed personally at Fort Ord, in Monterey County, California, the community came together to address the issue.  In NASB’s case, the region established the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority (MRRA).

Something I saw on television made me realize that ever since people started living together in villages, leaders have emerged among them. Leaders were usually a foot or more taller than average. They were strong, intelligent, sometimes good looking and if they didn't want to lead, they were often encouraged to do so by men who recognized their worth.

Just a few years ago, jumping out of bed in the morning to start a new day was as simple as pie. Now, jumping out of the bed has been replaced by slowly putting one foot down and then the other. And even that comes with quite a few creaks and groans. Those bones and muscles are just not as resilient anymore. But we are not alone. One look at America and you can’t help but notice that we all seem to be getting older – fast. In fact, every 7 seconds someone is turning 60 in America. So, in 2008, this very year, more than 4.5 million individuals will turn 60. The baby boomers, those born between the years 1946 and 1964 will number about 75 million.
