Last week, we ejected our chick from the nest ... well, gently. Our son and heir finally got housing at UMO, and I drove him up there last Sunday. It was something of a nightmare, checking in, because no one seemed to know that he was coming, but he is well and truly there now, at least until this weekend, when we are picking him up to go to the Common Ground Fair and spend the night at home, and he is bringing his dirty laundry with him.

Everyone of a certain age will remember where they were on this date seven years ago. On this date, seven years ago, I was down at the Portland Harbor Museum discussing an abortive plan to help them get some additional grant funding and get more visitors into their building. At least, I was on my way there.

Down at Turning Tide Cottage, things are still in a state of squalor from trying (unsuccessfully, as it happens) to find housing in Orono for our son and heir. Large boxes of student junk still clutter the hallway and laundry is still underdone. And for now, said son and heir will be driving three times per week to Orono to take class while waiting for housing to open up one way or t’other. In my car. But I did offer. I can walk to work; he can’t walk to class.
