Local group helping Iraqi child injured by U.S. sniper fire PDF Print E-mail
PORTLAND –A Maine-based chapter of No More Victims has been formed in order to bring over an Iraqi child to receive reconstructive surgery here in the state early next year. The five year old girl, named Nora, was shot by a U.S. Army sniper, leaving her missing a piece of her skull and with her face and head badly disfigured.

“We’re going to help a little girl in desperate need of medical care she cannot get in Iraq,” says John Eder, the Project Coordinator. “We want to show this girl, and her family, that most Americans feel terrible about their misfortune, and are dead set against this war. Quite understandably, many regular Iraqis have come to believe that Americans hate them, with this act of compassion we hope to demonstrate that this isn’t the case. Its a chance to show them that Mainers do care what's happening to them over there”

Maine Medical Center has agreed to provide Nora’s medical care. Nora and her father will be housed at the Ronald McDonald House in Portland during their stay in Maine – a stay which could last as long as six months to a year. A steady stream of volunteers and Arabic translators will be needed to help with day to day living so that father and daughter can be made comfortable in their unfamiliar surroundings.

The goal is to raise $30,000 for Nora’s stay here in Maine. “This Christmas people can go to the website to donate on their own and as a gift in someone else’s name. Its truly a gift to be able to help.” says Eder. “I see this as a way for us to take some responsibility and do something to overcome our feelings of powerlessness in the face of this disastrous war, and the stony eared politicians that initiated it and allow it to continue against the people’s will. "

No More Victims was founded in September 2002. The group works to obtain medical sponsorships for war-injured Iraqi children, and to forge ties between the children, their families, and communities in the United States.
