BRUNSWICK - “You can’t get a cup of soup around here” isn’t a pertinent excuse anymore for bargain hunters looking to save on cash and body fat during the lunch hour.  A cluster of these establishments have cropped up on Main Street, 111 Maine included.

I never knew what to make of the little shop with the red sign that had moved into the Boho’s former headquarters.  I visited when it first opened and it seemed primarily to be a bakery.  I can’t remember if there were any tables in the place or not, but I do remember feeling like it wasn’t really a place to go in and doodle in your journal and sip hot chocolate.

That seems to have changed.  I decided to give it another try the other day because I wasn’t in the mood for my regular haunts.  It was a dreary day, I still had most of my Christmas shopping ahead of me, and I hadn’t eaten a thing since eight.  That red sign looked pretty alluring all of a sudden.  I called an old friend and told her to meet me there for a late lunch.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that a) there were plenty of tables b) I had the place to myself and c) there were tasteful black and white nature photographs on the wall.  I was warmly greeted and seated, provided with a casual lunch menu, and served a delicious Greek Chicken Gyro.  No soup for me, but they serve two daily (one vegetarian) along with a few light salad options and a diverse menu of small plates and sandwiches.  The kind of place where you can doodle in your journal and sip hot chocolate.

Hours are 11 - 4 p.m. weekdays, 10 - 2 p.m. Sat. and Sun.  Be sure to check out the weekend brunch menu as well as the catering services at www.111maine.com/index.htm
