A Bath- type viaduct was rejected early on in the route selection process for a Wiscasset Route 1 bypass. But, under the circumstances, it may be time to look at it again. Compared to the options that MDOT is now planning, the viaduct idea, as flawed as it may be, could be far better. Here are some reasons why.
There is room for it. It could be far less expensive. It could be planned quickly, completed sooner, and in far less time. The topography lends itself to the concept. It could free up existing traffic lanes in downtown Wiscasset for local business and residential use. It could quickly move the through traffic, including most trucks, harmlessly overhead. It could eliminate the railroad grade crossing for the through traffic. It could prevent cutting a new highway path across the Sheepscot River and Harbor.
Because it would land on the existing bridge between Wiscasset and Edgecomb, it could generate support for the idea from the residents of both communities. It could increase the synergy among businesses on both sides of the downtown route. "Underground Wiscasset" could become an attractive shopping destination. It could add parking space, and make parking and walking and shopping in downtown Wiscasset easier, safer and more interesting. It could promote business. And, with creative design, it could be physically attractive, and reasonably quiet.
It is not too late to reject the current MDOT plans and substitute a viaduct instead. Perhaps it is time for a fresh look at the the concept of a Bath- type viaduct for the Wiscasset Route 1 bypass.
