BATH - The Natives Are Restless is more of a musical idea than a band.  Comprised of musicians playing in all kinds of bands all over the state, including members of the Big Chips Trio and the Lizz Lannon Band, it is, in their own words, “a big happy family” entering its third year.

For the Chocolate Church gig on Jan. 19, band leader and Big Chips Trio member Earl Bigelow quickly assembled a line-up to rehearse for just a few weeks before taking their set of covers and originals out into the world.  While the band does have core players, a revolving guest list fills out the rest of the group, depending on which instruments the songs call for and of course the availability of all the musicians.  The group that plays at the Chocolate Church on the 19th may not be the same group that hits some of the local festivals in the summer.

Miraculously, continuity isn’t a problem.  “We all know each other from playing in different bands together, so this is a fairly organic way of making music,” Bigelow said.

He wasn’t kidding.  Even as musicians filed in and out of his home studio to join the rehearsal, the combination of jazz, blues, and soul congealed as assuredly as you might expect from a loose but focused group of veterans.
The show takes place Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m.  Ticket prices are $10 - $15.
