More lighthouse mysteries surface PDF Print E-mail
EAST MACHIAS - More of Maine’s lighthouse history has resurfaced thanks to another vintage photograph that was sent to Tim Harrison, editor of Lighthouse Digest magazine.

Harrison who has spent nearly 20 years researching Maine’s lighthouse history said, “You never know what another day’s mail or email will bring or where the information will come from. In this case it was because of a story that appeared in many newspapers about a photograph of lighthouse keeper Loring Myers, who had served at Lubec Channel Lighthouse from 1890 to 1923. The story was read by some people who said they also had a lighthouse keeper by the same last name in their family tree and sent us the photograph.”

The photograph Harrison received this time was of Leroy L. Myers showing him in his Head Keeper uniform. “All we really know about him,” said Harrison, “is that he was a keeper at Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse in the mid 1930’s, but we don’t know the exact dates of if he was stationed at other Maine lighthouses.”

“The family that sent us the photo was able to supply us some other information that may lead to other clues, said Harrison. It is believed Leroy Myers was originally in the Life Saving Service before joining the Lighthouse Service. Leroy Myers married Mary Francis Reeves, who was from Machias.

Harrison hopes that by publishing this photograph that others will come forward who can help him piece together the rest of Myers’ history or that of other Maine lighthouses, the keepers who served at them, and their family stories.

Harrison says he believes there are hundreds of people out there with lighthouse history to share, saying, “They just don’t know we are looking for it.”
