WOOLWICH - The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has awarded a Nonpoint Source Pollution (NPS) grant to Androscoggin Valley Soil & Water Conservation District, an equal opportunity employer and provider. The Nequasset Lake Watershed Implementation Project focuses on increasing water quality in Nequasset Lake by reducing the amount of soil, sediments, and associated contaminants that are washed into the Lake from public and private roads, and public and private properties.
Through this grant, technical assistance will be provided for at least 25 sites in order to implement conservation practices. These practices will protect soil and water resources, lower maintenance costs and enhance property values. Technical assistance will include a report for the property owners. Designs, inspection of construction projects and maintenance plans will also be provided to participating landowners. Construction projects will be funded on a cost share basis.
A Steering committee comprised of ME DEP, municipal representatives, Bath Water District, Maine Rural Water Program, Androscoggin Valley and Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and watershed citizens is being formed. To volunteer for the committee, participate in grant activities; request technical assistance or help with conservation practices please contact AVSWCD at 753-9400, ext. 403.
A public meeting will be held to introduce the project to watershed citizens, date to be announced.
Funding for this project, in part, was provided by the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. Section 319 grants are administered by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection in partnership with EPA.
