PENOBSCOT BAY - Beginning in the summer of 2008, Pine Island Camp, a summer camp for boys that has been in operation in Belgrade Lakes for over 100 years, will expand its mission to begin offering enrichment programs for adults at the Whitehead Light Station in Penobscot Bay. The director of the Whitehead Light Station programs is Ben Swan of Brunswick, who has served as director of Pine Island Camp since 1990.
The following programs will be offered in 2008:
1. Cooking with Daisy: August 18-22, $2400 per person (double occupancy)
Instructor: Chef Daisy Martinez
A unique opportunity to work closely with Chef Daisy Martinez and gain an introduction to French, Italian, and Latin cooking.
2. Piracy: Ancient and Modern: August 24-28, $2400 per person (double occupancy)
Instructor: Professor Andy Jameson
The seminar will survey both the geographical and historical context of piracy - beginning with the classical Greco-Roman world and ending with piracy on the high seas today.
3. Painting With Spirit: September 26-28, $1500 per person (double occupancy), limited to 12 participants
Instructor: Brady Nickerson
“Painting with Spirit” is an innovative and original approach to personal and spontaneous self-expression, inner adventure and discovery through the use of color and design. This form of painting focuses on the “process” rather than the product or end result without criticism or judgment.
4. Whitehead Light Station Portfolio: A Photography Workshop: September 19-21, $1500 per person (double occupancy), limited to 12 participants
Instructor: William Abranowicz
The idea of this workshop is that you are to cover this historic Maine island light station as a travel assignment. You should think of yourself as a photojournalist, landing in a new place and charged with giving shape to a story regardless of conditions and on deadline.
5. Mindfulness Stress Reduction: September 7-12, $2400 per person (double occupancy), limited to 12 participants
Instructor: Reverend Dr. Robert Cox
Mindfulness Stress Reduction (MSR) is a rigorous and systematic training in mindfulness, a form of meditation developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. By learning and practicing MSR, thousands of people have learned to manage stress, pain, and illness and the challenges inherent in everyday modern life.
It was Thomas Jefferson’s signature that authorized the construction of a small dwelling and a stone lighthouse in 1803 on Whitehead Island, which lies at the mouth of Penobscot Bay. Ever since, the Whitehead Light Station has provided a beacon to mariners making their way up and down the Maine coast. In 1982, Whitehead Light Station was automated and, while the lighthouse continued to operate, the dwellings and outbuildings were shuttered and abandoned. In 1996, through the Maine Lights Program, Pine Island Camp became owner of the Whitehead Light Station and began renovations. The restoration process was completed in 2008 and the result is a facility that is remote but comfortable, with a private bath in each room, electricity, and comfortable common areas, including a library.
Today the Light Station continues to provide a beacon to mariners from its granite lighthouse, and it has a new mission: to provide programming for adults that will give them the opportunity to experience life at a historic Maine island light station and to step out of the busy world of the mainland and to gain knowledge of specific subjects, the Maine coast, and themselves.
