I feel betrayed … again … by my government. We were lied to by Secretary Rumsfeld and BRAC. It was egregious folly to expect financial savings and higher defense against attackers by closing BNAS. I was right.
Closing the base is a cynical political ploy. It will cause great difficulty for thousands of people and end up costing us far more than keeping it open would, both at Brunswick and Jacksonville. I believe those who pushed that closure through should be indicted for fraud, for causing serious damage to the culture of this part of Maine, and for compromising our National security.
They can redeem themselves by cancelling the closing, and modernizing and upgrading the flying mission at Brunswick. I call on our Congressional delegation to work harder to cancel the closure.
