Beating the ethanol dead horse |

I would like to comment on your editorial on Feb 28th, “Debunking The Biofuels Myth”. I believe you are beating a dead horse. The future for ethanol fuel is in cellulosic biomass, not food grains. Biomass produced from wood chips, an abundant by product of our forest products industry, has a bright future, especially right here in Maine, which is the most heavily forested state in the Union.
I am excited about this because I have just been reading the latest issue of the MIT Technology Review “Emerging Technologies For 2008” (www.TechnologyReview.com).
You might want to check out three articles on current research: “Mining Pathways For Biofuels”, “Cellulolytic Enzymes’, and “Ethanol From Old Tires And Garbage”. Brazil already making and exporting ethanol from sugarcane waste after the sugar has been extracted. The technology already exists, and the market is coming right along.
