AUGUSTA — On Monday, March 17, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) bestowed awards for carbon emission reduction efforts to twenty businesses, organizations, and individuals at the annual "Governor's Carbon Challenge Networking and Expo Forum” at the Senator Inn in Augusta.
The awardees are recognized for achieving a 10% or more decrease in their carbon emissions. DEP Commissioner David Littell notes, “Overall the Governor’s Carbon Challenge Program results to date demonstrate a carbon reduction of 96,505 metric tons, the equivalent of taking over 26,000 passenger cars off the road.”
Sixty-four participants have joined the Governor’s Carbon Challenge Program since it began in 2003 and their efforts of energy and carbon reductions continually improve Maine’s environment and help to reverse climate change patterns.
