I’ve been tired the last few weeks, and I don’t have a very good excuse for why I’ve been tired. I’m not working harder than I have been. I’ve been getting a relatively good night’s sleep, that is until Rudie the Dog decides she wants me up at some ungodly early hour, such as 5 a.m., when the Sun makes its appearance. I’ve been exercising moderately, drinking moderately, and eating moderately.
“It’s stress,” said Chris.
Well, I can’t imagine what in the world I could be stressed out about, unless too many bills, not enough money, a too-full summer schedule, a new family member by the school year, getting our house ready for winter, and getting our son and heir ready to go back to college can cause stress.
Personally, I don’t think that’s it. I mean, if that were all it was, everybody would be walking around like the living dead all the time, and as far as I can tell, I’m the only one.
Bill my designer thoughtfully brought me a bottle of Odwalla Superfood this morning. It’s a fruit and vegetable drink, with antioxidants and loads of vitamin C. It’s also got spirulina in it ... quite a lot of it. I wasn’t sure what that was, so I looked it up on the internet. Turns out, spirulina is blue-green algae, or what we call cyanobacteria nowadays. Basically, it’s the stuff that grows on the inside of your fish tank.
However, it also has super health properties, including preventing heart damage, inhibiting the growth of the HIV virus in test tubes, reduces the incidence and severity of strokes, and is a complete protein, containing all the amino acids, as well as about a billion vitamins, which makes it a terrific food source for the third world.
I drank as much as I could ... despite the fruit juice blended with it, it still has a kind of ‘green’ flavor ... and I must say I do feel a bit better.
The weather being what it was over the weekend, I curled up inside Turning Tide Cottage with a throw and a couple of library books and let it rain. I didn’t have anywhere I had to go, anyway, and Chris was working, so Rudie and I settled down after tidying up the house and read. Rather, I read and she snored. When Chris came home, he took Rudie down to the Dog Park for a squishy romp through the mud, and she lost another ball.
It was cold ... actually cold and raw enough on Saturday to make chicken soup. As much as I like chicken soup, I can’t say I am looking forward to chicken soup season until we’ve at least had barbeque season, which as far as I’m concerned we haven’t yet. It’s been either too hot and muggy or too cold and rainy.
Sunday I watched Meet the Press, but it was awfully sad to see Tom Brokaw trying to do Tim Russert’s job. It’s not Tom Brokaw’s fault ... it would be depressing to see anybody trying to do Tim Russert’s job. I may have to find a new Sunday tradition ... at least after the election.
I hope the weather will improve as we approach the holiday weekend. For one thing, we love Heritage Days. Heritage Days should be synonymous with fried dough, caramel apples, and those water gun balloon games. Chris and I often play those games, win a prize, then give it to the nearest kid. We just like playing the games - we don’t care about the prize. I’m also looking forward to the library book sale, since I am running out of reading material. Winter lasts a long time in Maine ... it is really a good thing to get as many books as possible.
The sound of the Bath Band striking up in the park as dusk falls and the fireworks start is small town living at its finest.
But of course, if it rains, none of that will happen ... or will be pretty uncomfortable, anyway.
So it’s time for everyone to do a sun-dance for this weekend.
Then we can all curl up and take another nap for a few days.
