BATH - The City of Bath Department of Public Works announces that Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) trash collection will begin Monday October 1.  All residents of Bath who currently receive curbside collection of their solid waste are included in the program. Residents must place their household waste in official, blue, City of Bath bags for collection.  Waste not in the official bags will no longer be collected.

Bags will be sold in rolls of 5 each.  Two sizes will be offered:  15-gallon bags for $6.25 per roll and 33-gallon bags for $10.00 per roll.  Bags will be sold by these Bath retailers:

•  Bath Natural Market
•  Big Apple
•  Brackett’s Market
•  Clipper Mart
•  CVS
•  Renys
•  Rogers Ace Hardware
•  Shaw’s

Other bags may be placed inside the official bags and the official bags may be placed inside trash cans if residents prefer.  Waste items not completely inside the bags will not be collected.  The program will not apply to businesses, residents in 3-unit or greater multi-family housing, non-profits, or schools.  These units are picked up by private contactors currently.
Revenues from bag sales will be dedicated to major solid waste expenses such as landfill closure or development, and future transportation and disposal costs.

Recycling will continue to be collected free of charge.  The City has recently instituted single stream recycling, greatly expanding the type and quantity of materials that will be collected.  Residents are encouraged to recycle as much as possible to reduce their bag purchases.  Recycling bins (“Bath Tubs”) are available but not necessary for curbside recycling.  Stickers are available to turn any container into a recycling tub.  However, residents are cautioned not to utilize containers larger than 32 gallons.  Residents are also encouraged to begin a backyard compost pile for food and yard waste to further reduce the need to buy official bags.

Informational brochures, refrigerator magnets, and recycling bin stickers are available at the Bath Landfill and Bath City Hall.
