ELLSWORTH & PORTLAND—The Guy P. Gannett Journalism Scholarship Fund of the Maine Community Foundation has awarded just over $308,000 in scholarships to 26 students, all graduates of Maine high schools. They will receive financial support for graduate and undergraduate studies at schools across the U.S. and abroad, including American University in Rome, Northeastern, Skidmore, Columbia, Endicott, Emerson, Fordham, University of Maine, UC Berkeley and Michigan State.
The new 2007Gannett Scholars are Lindsey Alston, Portland; Zachary Dionne, Benton; Jonathan Gamble, Roxbury; Meghan Hayward, Machias; Andrew Koch, Portland; Katie Poirier, Biddeford; Timothy Pratt, Kennebunk; Rebekah Rhodes, Rockland; Hunter Umphrey, Eddington; Kegan Zema, South Portland; Abigail Curtis, Orono; and Andrea Galyean, Bucksport.
Fourteen students had their Gannett scholarships renewed: Emily Blanck, Winthrop; Kelsea Brenna-Wessels, Kennebunk; Catlin Coyle, Camden; Caitlyn Coyne, Readfield; Samantha DePoy-Warren, Farmington; Patrick Doyle, Falmouth; Matthew Forcier, Biddeford; Tyler Franck, Presque Isle; Paul Henderson, Appleton; Whitney Hodgdon, Stockton Springs; Sarah Katz, Portland; Josh Keefe, Veazie; Nicholas McCrea, Orrington; and Sarah Thiboutot, Waterville.
All 26 students have been pursuing journalism projects and careers in Maine and elsewhere, reporting for newspapers, radio and TV stations. A few examples: Lindsey Alston has written for and hosted the national kids’ TV program, Yes to Youth; Jonathan Gamble wrote several articles for the Rumford Falls Times, Kelsey Brennan-Wessels is an intern at the Portland Phoenix; and Samantha DePoy-Warren is a correspondent for the Morning Sentinel.
A volunteer review committee selected the students based on demonstrated interest in journalism, excellence in academic performance and financial need. The fund helps pay tuition to attend an undergraduate, graduate, trade, or technical school.
Applications for the 2008 Gannett Journalism Scholarship will be available in January at high school guidance offices and at www.mainecf.org.
