BATH — Since the issue of restricting the use of fireworks could not be adequately addressed during their regular meeting, Bath City Council has decided to hold a televised workshop discussion on the matter on November 9.

City Councilor Mari Eosco said she and the other council members at their October 5 meeting discovered there was much more to the subject, and that they would have to hold the workshop to address all of the issues before a decision could be made.

‘QR’ codes: what are they? How do you use them?

You see them everywhere, these two-dimensional, black-and-white barcodes that are appearing on everything from storefront posters to the front pages of newspapers. What are they? Who can use them and how? Maybe you've seen someone hover their cell phone over one of these pixilated squares, push a button, and then scrutinize their cell phone screen.

Start-up companies are using these quick response codes or "QR Codes" to help people keep track of their pets or lost luggage, according to one article in Digital Trends (www.digitaltrends.com). The most common use for the QR code is as a slick marketing gimmick; consumers just scan the codes with their smart phones and be instantly directed to a company's website.

JEFFERSON — Stone sculptors have been grinding, cracking, sanding, drilling, planning and communing together for the second annual stone Sculpture Symposium in Jefferson, which runs from October 8 to October 16. Hosted by Jefferson-based granite supplier and fabricator J.C. Stone, which is co-owned by Kathleen and Jaime Carle, the symposium draws exceptional stone sculptors from all over Maine. Their finished works will be on display at a tent on the J.C. Stone site on Route 17 Saturday and Sunday, October 15 and 16. Public viewing has been held throughout the week each day, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In concert with the Maine Stone Workers' Guild, the symposium in Jefferson got its start when Kathleen Carle approached master sculptor Don Meserve of Round Pond. As a brochure for the symposium states, it was Meserve's last symposium and last gathering of friends. He passed away on November 3, 2010, the month following last year's symposium. With the support and guidance of Meserve, and the efforts of Kathleen Carle, her husband Jaime and others, the first annual J.C. Stone Sculpture Symposium was born.

NEWCASTLE — A member of the Anah Temple Shrine lost his life while driving a go-kart during the annual Damariscotta Pumpkinfest parade in Newcastle on Saturday, October 8.

Just before 3 p.m., Marvin Tarbox, 59, of Hancock, lost control of his go-kart while driving over a ramp set above an SUV, and died after the collision.

According to accident reconstruction specialist Sgt. Jason Nein of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Tarbox was a member of the Shrine's demonstration team that set the ramp over the length of the vehicle, from back to front. The team followed the parade that had crossed the twin village bridge into Damariscotta. Go-kart riders were driving their karts over the ramp, from back to front, when the accident occurred near the intersection known as Newcastle Square.
