ROCKPORT — The Cancer Care Center at Pen Bay Medical Center has been awarded a grant of $20,000 from the Maine Cancer Foundation.
This funding will help launch a new research program, which will offer clinical trials to patients with cancer and blood disorders in the Pen Bay Healthcare service area. Pen Bay has an established Clinical Research department, but has not yet participated in cancer research.
“The Cancer Care and Blood Disorder research program will enable cancer patients in our area to participate in cancer trials close to their residences, near to families and friends, in familiar surroundings, with easy access to their doctors, nurses and other care providers,” said Caroline Knight, Pen Bay’s clinical research coordinator. Currently the nearest locations for such clinical trials are Brunswick and Augusta.
“Offering these clinical trials at Pen Bay will be convenient and comforting for our patients,” said Dr. Nadia Ramdin, hematologist/medical oncologist at the Cancer Care Center. “In addition, it will give our patients and physicians access to cutting-edge medicine, will help to keep the Cancer Care staff current regarding evidence-based practice, and could offset some of the costs of high quality care.” The Pen Bay Cancer Care Center is online at www.pbmc.org/cancercare and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/penbaycancercare.
The Maine Cancer Foundation, based in Falmouth, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Maine people by funding cancer research, education and patient support programs. One hundred percent of funds raised remain in Maine. “It is gratifying to serve the people of Maine with these grants,” said Tara Hill, executive director.
