ROCKLAND — Out! As I Want to Be will hold an Open House in its new space at 38 Main St, Suite 305 (3rd floor), Rockland, on Friday, Dec. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. The open house is a chance to celebrate accomplishments by Out! youth and to enjoy Out’s new home as well as to learn more about Out! As I Want to Be’s plans for the future. Everyone is welcome; refreshments will be served.
The year has been busy for the drop in program and the organization. In May 2012, Out! sponsored Jamie Nabozny’s visit to midcoast Maine. Out! youth have been active with many activities this year, including the Project AWARE and Family Planning Association’s video project on teen relationships and sexual health resulting in the short film “Two Seconds.” Youth also have been active with Mainers for Marriage Equality campaign and Get Out the Vote efforts.
This summer, Out! was displaced with the closing of the Lincoln Street Center and the drop-in program has been hosted by Youthlinks in Rockland.
“We are so grateful to Youthlinks, and Broadreach for extending their warm welcome to us,” said Out! Executive Director Harriet Mosher. “Youthlinks is such an important program for young people in Rockland and we look forward to collaborating with them on an ongoing basis.”
Founded in 1996, Out! provides affirmation, support, advocacy, education and outreach by and for young people in their quest for identity. Out! holds a drop-in two times a week, now at 328 Main St, Suite 305 (3rd floor), Rockland on Wednesdays, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. One of four drop in centers in the state, Out! is the only one that primarily serves rural LGBTQ youth. This spring, Out! brought Jamie Nabozny to midcoast Maine to screen and discuss the Southern Poverty Law center film “Bullied: A Student, A School, and A Case that Made History.” Nabozny spoke to more than 3,000 students from eight local schools, with a message of hope that students can indeed stop bullying in their schools and communities.
