Go solar for abundant clean energy. You can start with simple steps like growing a kitchen garden -- the closer to home your food is grown, the less dirty fossil fuel required. Or you can make the switch to heat and power your home completely by clean solar energy. The sunlight falling on just one acre in Portland could support all the energy needs of one hundred and sixty Maine families.

ORONO — Dr. Steven Chu, U.S. Secretary of Energy, will visit the University of Maine to learn more about its cutting-edge, deepwater, offshore wind energy research program. Secretary Chu and Senator Susan Collins are scheduled to visit the University's Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center on Monday, June 14.
Chu is visiting at Collins' invitation. "I believe that deepwater, offshore wind energy is a critical investment in Maine's future," Collins said. She pointed to estimates that development of five gigawatts of offshore wind in Maine – enough to power more than 1 million homes for a year -- could attract $20 billion of investment to the state and create more than 15,000 green energy jobs that will be sustained over 30 years.

AUGUSTA – This month, Governor John E. Baldacci recognized the Maine Legislature and the many public and private partners that worked to further Maine's aggressive goals to achieve energy independence. He ceremonially signed five bills that take critical next steps to achieve these clean energy goals. "Maine's energy, environment and economic landscape will be improved for generations to come, and Maine people will benefit by being healthier and more economically secure thanks to your support of green energy development," said Governor Baldacci. "For far too long we've been dependent on fossil fuels to heat our homes, power our industries and transport goods and people. Together, we are pursuing clean, renewable, home-grown energy that will enable us to kick the oil habit."
