Story and photos by Bruce Hardina Coastal Journal staff
Two weekends ago, my family and I drove to Camden and spent the afternoon. It is a lovely town and we are thrilled it represents the northern part of our midcoast community. This photo essay is a result of that afternoon.
The Megunticook River waterfall is at the mouth of the river, and plunges into Camden Harbor. The river was a source of power for the Knox Mill, located farther up the river on Mechanic Street. Just above where the photo was taken is where the Camden Grist Mill Company and the Camden Anchorworks used to reside. The factory burned in 1935, and the public landing was made on the site. We were not able to determine when the Grist Mill ended; however, it is mentioned in the town history up to 1913. The Camden Deli currently sits on that site. (A thanks to Heather Bilodeau, Director, Walsh History Center, Camden Public Library for providing this information).
