Harpswell must ensure its future PDF Print

Harpswell's Workforce/Affordable Housing Committee has written an amendment to Harpswell's Basic Land Use Ordinance that provides incentives for the construction of workforce housing. The amendment will be on the warrant at Town Meeting in March. The Selectmen gave the committee the charge of developing an ordinance as part of its mission statement. The amendment is intended "to provide for and promote the acquisition and construction of housing that is affordable for current and future generations of Harpswell residents". The committee began studying similar ordinances from all over the state and country in 2006 to see what would work best for Harpswell. It began the actual drafting process in the summer of 2008.

RSU 1 still without contract PDF Print
When the Regional School Unit 1 (RSU 1) was established a year ago, the four teachers' associations also united and formed the Sagadahoc Education Association. Prior to RSU 1 each of the four towns had their own teacher contract and salary schedule. This year, with the exception of West Bath (which is still under an exisitng contract), a new, all emcompassing contract had to be developed. Negotiating for this contract began in January 2009. In June the board offered the association a proposal that was confusing. The proposal had no order-especially in the area of salaries. At the time the board itself was not able to explain its own proposal. Under their proposal nearly all teachers would see less pay because of offsets in health costs. The association flatly refused to let that happen, and the membership rejected the proposal virtually unanimously. However, the initial counter proposal made by the association was rejected without an explanation. The association¹s counter offer did not increase the school administration¹s cost by even a dime, because retiring teachers were replaced by lower salaried teachers and there was no increase in insurance cost for the upcoming school year.

We're all in this together PDF Print
I would like to publicly compliment our Principal Peter Kahl on his efforts to promote awareness and action in dealing with our regional substance abuse problem. When Mr. Kahl received this years Drug and Alcohol Survey report, he realized that in spite of the many efforts being undertaken by the school and community to reduce and eliminate substance abuse, more needed to be done. In an effort to do this he sought media support in publicizing a call for action against substance abuse. The result, were mixed. Channel 13's report showed a lack of journalistic professionalism that focused more on shocking and lurid phrases and images then a real concern for the issue.
