BATH – Boxes of blankets, towels, toys and treats are headed to the Houston Humane Society in Texas thanks to the efforts of Regan Reed, owner of Wags & Whiskers, and her staff. Bob Plourde, owner of Mail It 4 U, offered to help get it there.

The pet supply store owner raised $6,000 over the last week to help animals affected by Hurricane Harvey. “That doesn’t include the 1,000 lbs. of dog and cat food that people came in and donated,” Reed said. “And the treats and toys, and so much more.”

She started making calls to Houston area animal refuge leagues on Labor Day to find out how she could help, but no one called her back until Aug. 31. Details of the fundraiser went up on social media the same day, and by Sept. 1, Reed had collected $1,200.

“The response was unbelievable. What a community,” she said.

Plourde picked up the  items Wednesday afternoon. He partially donated the  service required to wrap everything on pallets and ship it to Houston. He was happy to help, he said.

In addition to the goods sent through Mail It 4 U, Reed said a truck is already on its way to Texas from her distributor, Phillip’s Pet Food and Supplies in Pennsylvania. She used the cash donations to purchase 104 bags of 30 lb. dog food; 40 bags of 40 lb. cat litter, 10 bags of 15 lb. cat food, and more.

“It was a little idea with a lot of help, ” Reed said.

While Wags & Whiskers is no longer collecting donations for Houston area pets, Reed suggests those who would like to help, visit www.houstonhumane.org.
