AUGUSTA — Harpswell’s American Legion Post 171 held its 12th annual Christmas party for Togus VA long-term care patients on Dec. 8, with members of the Navy and Coast Guard assisting patients at the pizza and lobster roll lunch, and with opening individual gifts afterward.

Major gifts were Nintendo and PS4 gaming systems, including NASCAR and bowling. Ray Poulin (Best Buy) raised $330 and purchased movies and some of the games. Individual gift boxes contained items such as $10 store coupons, socks, Chapstick, pens, candy etc.

The 50 boxes were accompanied by 50 cards signed by All Saints Parish Catholic School students. Eighteen sailors, including the executive officer from the USS Michael Monsoor, Capt. Sean Kearns, crew from the Monsoor and from the USS Thomas Hudner attended, as did three Coast Guard members from South Portland. They all brought command ball caps to pass out to the patients.

Two ladies from the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Auxiliary came. Santa Roy Knight arranged for lobster rolls.
