With over 3,000 projects completed around the Midcoast of Maine, Wally J. Staples Builders may have crossed your path once or twice.

The company just reached 25 years in business. With 16 employees and a range of trusted contractors, Wally and his team have contracted all types of jobs including: Homes designed from the ground up, additions, boat houses, barns, basement remodels, from large commercial projects to kitchen renovations, they’ve done it.

The company got its start back in 1993, but Wally knew he was destined to be building things well before that.

From a young age, he was involved in the carpentry process, from the initial stages of honing raw materials into lumber to the final stages of finishing a house. He comes from a line of woodworkers, and as a kid he worked at his grandfather’s sawmill in Durham. As a teenager, he grew into working for his father’s log home business.

“I always had the natural ability to do carpentry work, even as a kid,” he said.

After learning the skills of the trade, he built his first house at age 18. He was hooked. He started his own company soon after. At first, he had just a field crew who he worked along side of, but now has several crews working up and down the Midcoast.

“It’s so gratifying to build something, and see what you’ve done at the end of the day, and knowing it’s going to stand there potentially for centuries if you do it right,” he said.

Doing it right is Wally J. Staples Builders modus operandi. Wally believes the most wonderful people anywhere reside in the Midcoast and knows he’s been blessed to work for the best of them. Building strong relationships with customers and contractors has helped the company retain talented carpenters and tradespeople who do the job to Wally’s standards.

“We have a really great pool of subcontractors, many we have worked with going on 20 years,” said Staples “We’re able to service a wide variety of types of projects with the talent that we have.”

It’s not just about the building part of things either. They have their own In-House Designers and design space/showroom, allowing clients to get help finding exactly what they need to complete the build all in the same facility.

“We basically plan the project with the homeowner to a budget, and we make selections up front,” he said. “They’re all hard numbers, they’re not allowances anymore.”

While some contractors might give you a range of costs, Wally J. Staples Builders tells you up front what the costs will be, period.

Despite being in it for 25 years, he said his love for the job hasn’t waned in the slightest.

“When I was younger I thought, ‘I’m going to retire when I’m 50, 55,’” he said. “Now I don’t know that I would ever retire because I love it so much. If you love something, and you really enjoy doing it and working with people, why would you want to get out of it? This is my passion, so this is what I’ll do.”

That passion trickles down to the carpenters and other employees, some who’ve been with Wally for nearly 20 years, and shows in the projects, which is why most customers come back when they have another project in mind.
